Care to Change was created when April and her business partner recognized a need for a counseling center with a different approach: one that combines education and research with experience and Biblical truths, one that is focused on walking alongside people and helping them overcome obstacles, find joy and live God’s purpose.
For more than two decades April’s professional career has been focused on giving strength and hope to people faced with relationship challenges and impacted by trauma. During her undergraduate studies at Purdue, April mentored at-risk youth in a community center and interned with Child Protective Services. She went on to the University of Michigan, earned a Master’s Degree and then became a therapist at a psychiatric hospital where she worked with suicidal/homicidal youth who had endured complex trauma and abuse.
After returning to Indiana, April next worked in a residential treatment facility for young people, first as a therapist and then as a manager, overseeing case managers, therapists and direct care staff who worked directly with children and families impacted by abuse and/or trauma. She later began working as the executive director of Sheltering Wings Center for Women, a Christ-centered domestic violence shelter. Once again, she found herself working with people whose lives had been rocked by trauma: women who had endured all types of abuse from a partner, and children who witnessed that violent behavior.
April applied her experience at running non-profit social service organizations to guide a variety of groups throughout the U.S. through their own challenges. She has also worked with children at several Chinese orphanages and helped adoptive families prepare, transition, and thrive with their adoptive children. As a licensed clinical social worker, April continued to provide counseling to individuals and families, and deepened her professional skills by becoming a Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) practitioner at Texas Christian University and receiving training in Theraplay at the Theraplay Institute in Chicago. She is also a registered Prepare-Enrich facilitator for pre-married and married couples.
April and her husband, Randy, have been married for nearly twenty years, and enjoy sharing their lives with their children. Together, they are active members of Kingsway Christian Church.
April is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors.
